Violin

Seventeen-year old violinist Gabrielle Després was born in Edmonton, began violin studies at the age of 3 and studied with James Keene for nine years. She is currently studying with Robert Uchida. She has won numerous local, provincial and national competitions, including prizes at the nationals of the Canadian Music Competition in both violin and piano. In 2012, Gabrielle performed the complete Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Concordia University Orchestra, and as the winner of the Intermediate age group of the Northern Alberta Concerto Competition, she performed with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra at the Winspear Centre. She has performed in violin classes for Midori, Ida Kavafian, Mihaela Martin, Daniel Phillips, Andrew Wan, and Jonathan Crow. Summer studies have included the Orford Summer Music Academy, the Morningside Music Bridge program in Calgary and Boston, and the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy. Gabrielle was featured on Radio-Canada’s television show, “Virtuose,” which aired nationwide in 2016, placing second out of 24 young Canadian artists on this weekly series. Last year, she won the senior division of the Northern Alberta Concerto Competition and performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Edmonton Youth
Orchestra and was one of 6 finalists in the bi-annual Shean Competition for Strings.

 

Sonya Shin

Violin

Korean Canadian violinist, Sonya Shin, started her violin studies at the age of five with Anne Mcdougall, and is currently studying with Concert Master of Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Robert Uchida. She has participated in many local, provincial, and national competitions over the past eleven years.

Sonya is a three time Canadian Music Competition finalist and received a scholarship for her
performance in 2012. For two seasons, Sonya was the concertmistress of the Edmonton Intermediate Youth Orchestra and is currently the Concert Mistress of the Senior EYO. She has recieved numerous of scholarships from EYO for her contribution to the orchestra and her auditions. In 2013 and 2015, she was a Northern Alberta Concerto Competition finalist. During the summer of 2014, Sonya attended Morningside Music Bridge, a program for young musicians internationally. The year after, she participated in the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy. In the summer of 2017, she particpated in the National Arts Centre- Young Artists Program and played for many well respected artists. Sonya has recieved scholarships from the Korean Canadian Foundation, the Alexandra M. Munn Scholarships and The O’Neill Foundation. In the past, Sonya has played for Patinka Kopec, Grigory
Kalinovsky, Andrew Dawes, Taras Gabora, Andrew Wan, Annalee Patipatanakoon, Judy Kang, and Jonathan Crow.

Sonya also studied piano with Zuzana Simurdova. Aside from music, she enjoys photography, traveling, hiking cooking. She is a grade eleven student at Strathcona High School. Sonya hopes to pursue music as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher.
