Margo Hornett began her flute studies at the age of ten with Hilary Amante in Calgary, Alberta. What started as a hobby quickly progressed to a full love of the instrument, and she began taking RCM exams, where she received the Alberta Gold Award twice. Margo continued to take private lessons with Tamara Fonseca through Junior High and High School, and she was also a member of her High School ensembles from 2015-2017, the Alberta Honour Band, and was a featured soloist in multiple performances. She continued her flute studies into University, where she obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance with Distinction at the University of Calgary in May of 2022, under the direction of Gwen Klassen. She also holds an Advanced Performance Certificate from Mount Royal University. Currently, Margo is a Master’s student at the University of Alberta, where she is pursuing a Master’s of Music degree in Flute Performance, under the direction of Dr. Angela Schroeder and retired assistant principal of the ESO, Shelley Younge. Margo is currently the principal flute of the University Symphony Orchestra and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and is a member of multiple chamber groups and other bands. She has performed in masterclasses for multiple performance artists, such as Alex Klein, Jim Walker, Liz Koch, Kelly Zimba and Wallace Halliday. When Margo isn’t practicing, you can find her travelling, hanging out with friends, or exploring in the mountains.
